The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has taken a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility by launching 13 new feeder electric bus routes in Islamabad. This initiative aims to provide eco-friendly, affordable, and efficient transport options while reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.
Key Highlights of the Electric Bus Initiative
- 120 electric buses currently in operation across Islamabad.
- 40 additional buses to be deployed by June 2025.
- Integration with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network for seamless connectivity.
- 216 planned bus stops and four strategically located depots.
- Multimodal Intercity Bus Terminal at I-11 under development with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Chairman Randhawa’s Vision for Green Mobility
Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa emphasized that transitioning to electric buses goes beyond reducing emissions—it is about creating an efficient and sustainable public transport system.
During a recent meeting at CDA Headquarters, he reviewed the progress of the electric and feeder bus operations, reiterating the commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more commuter-friendly Islamabad.
Current Operations and Future Expansion
- First batch of 30 electric buses launched in July 2024, already serving 32,000+ daily passengers.
- Additional 40 buses expected by June 2025, following the completion of charging infrastructure at the H-9 Bus Depot.
- Future projects include a public transport master plan and expansion of electric mobility solutions.
Policy Changes & Sustainable Transport Plans
The CDA is working closely with public institutions and universities to encourage the transition to electric transportation. Chairman Randhawa also stressed the importance of reducing reliance on government subsidies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.
